Seed Oil Scanner Apps in 2027: Grocery Scanners vs Restaurant Maps

“Seed oil apps” do two different jobs. Grocery scanners such as HealthierCart, Tallow and Bobby Approved read a product's barcode and check its ingredient list. Restaurant maps such as Seed Oil Scout and Oil Watch show which restaurants cook without seed oils. If you're avoiding seed oils at home and when eating out, you'll probably want one of each.

Grocery scanners

• HealthierCart: free to scan, Premium $9.99 once. Flags refined seed oils (soybean, canola, corn, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, rice bran) alongside artificial dyes and additives, links the source for each flag, and suggests swaps. iPhone.
• Tallow: free to download. Its App Store description says it checks seed oils, additives and dyes against standards you set, and also scores personal care products.
• Bobby Approved: free to download. Highlights the ingredients its standards reject in red and explains why, according to its App Store listing.

Restaurant maps

• Seed Oil Scout: a map of seed oil use at restaurants, with tags such as grass-fed and gluten-free. Subscription after a 7-day free trial, per its App Store listing.
• Oil Watch: a free restaurant map labelling places from Seed Oil Free to Contains Seed Oils, with a paid Pro tier, per its App Store listing.

What counts as a seed oil on a label

• Soybean oil, and “vegetable oil”, which in the US is usually soybean oil or a blend
• Canola or rapeseed oil
• Corn oil and cottonseed oil
• Sunflower and safflower oil
• Grapeseed oil and rice bran oil

How HealthierCart handles oils

HealthierCart flags refined seed oils and palm oil as nutritional-quality concerns and explains why, with the source linked. It doesn't treat every fat as a problem: olive, avocado and coconut oil are not penalised. The flag is information for your own call, not a verdict that a food is dangerous.
